Thank you for visiting this site and for your interest in the future of the Smethwick to Birmingham Corridor
Our initial survey is now closed but we will be consulting on the draft development framework later in the year. Please check back for updates or sign up to our mailing list for further information about the project in the coming months.

The corridor runs from the Ladywood Middleway and follows the A457 Dudley Road/Soho Way and Birmingham Canal as far as Smethwick Galton Bridge. In Birmingham it includes Icknield Port Loop, the City Hospital, Summerfield Park, Dudley Road local centre and surrounding neighbourhoods. In Sandwell it includes the Grove Lane area, the area around Smethwick Rolfe Street Station including north Smethwick canalside, Smethwick High Street district centre and Smethwick Galton Bridge Station.
Background

Birmingham City Council and Sandwell Council are working with West Midlands Combined Authority, Homes England, Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust and the Canal & River Trust to regenerate the Smethwick to Birmingham corridor. The new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital provides a major opportunity to rejuvenate the area, supporting a healthy community for those who already live here and those who will choose to live, work and visit here.

Birmingham City Council and Sandwell Council have appointed consultants Tibbalds Planning and Urban Design, Urban Movement and Aspinall Verdi to assist them in creating a development framework for the Smethwick to Birmingham Corridor and an up-to-date masterplan for Grove Lane, around the new hospital. The aim of the development framework is to set out a long-term vision for the development of the area. It will support a coordinated approach to development, identify improvements to the local environment and facilities, and set out a strategy for transport.

We will be producing a draft development framework for consultation later this year, which will include a vision and objectives for the corridor, and also a masterplan for the Grove Lane area. We will be asking for the views of the local community and what you would like to see change in this area.

Check back to view our Frequently Asked Questions page on this website which will respond to the recurring queries that we receive as part of the early stage consultation.
